A PBX (private branch exchange) is a private telephone exchange that gives a company or organisation its own telephone numbers (extensions or internal numbers) to call each other. These numbers can also call out to external telephone networks.

There are two common types of PABX system: analog (switching PBX) and digital (IP-PBX). Today there are many PABX systems on the market, analog and IP, with many connection options such as PSTN, SIP trunk, E1 and others. So which one should you choose? The answer is here.

Choosing a PABX type

1.1 Analog PABX

This is the traditional type of PABX, which uses telephone cable pairs to connect each phone to the exchange, with capacities from 2 lines upwards. These systems are not expensive, but installation is harder because a telephone cable has to be run to each extension. If you have 100 extensions, you need to run 100 cable pairs. When a cable fails, the fault can be hard to find, and the cabling budget is quite high.

1.2 IP-PBX

This is a PABX service over the internet or your network. You can install it yourself or rent the service from a provider. Internal connections use LAN or fiber cable, and WiFi is also supported, so it is easy to expand as your organisation grows. It has all the basic functions of an analog PABX, and external connections go through VoIP, which extends what the system can do and lets you communicate more widely. Calls between your organisation and its branches can cost much less.

How to choose the right PABX

If you are not sure whether to start from the number of outside lines, the number of extensions or the type of system, use our guide how to choose the right PABX as a checklist before planning the actual system.

1. Assess how many outside lines you need for incoming calls

Consider the number of lines needed at peak times. For example, if many outside calls come in at the same time, choose enough outside lines to match, such as 4 or 8 outside lines.

2. The number of extensions needed for internal communication

Plan and survey how many lines and numbers you need and which departments you have, so you can specify the number of extension cards and design the extension numbering.

3. The type of PABX you need: analog, digital or IP

4. Any additional features you need

PABX technology has developed over many years, and some models can now do much more, such as switching room power on and off, public address announcements, and working with security devices such as CCTV and fire detectors. Study the features of each system carefully first.

Repairing, moving and configuring existing PABX systems

If your existing PABX has problems, such as outside lines not coming in, extensions that cannot be reached, a need for more extensions or an office move, our team can fix and configure the existing system, so you don’t need to buy a whole new one.
