What is Fiber Optic Cable?

Fiber-optic cable is composed of a core made from purified glass fibres. Its main function is to transmit light from a source to another end for the purpose of data network communications and other types of telecommunication.
Because fiber-optic transmits light, it can cover very long distances and carry large bandwidths. Fiber Optic is not affected by electromagnetic interference.
In the current era, computer networks require media that can transmit ever larger volumes of data and fiber-optic is an excellent solution. With costs of fiber-optic equipment and installation having lowered significantly, its popularity has increased.
At present, fiber-optic is commonly used for the network backbone; it is less common for minor internal runs (within a building) because copper cabling is still widely used. There are two main modes of fiber-optic cable:

Single Mode (SM): Typically yellow, with core/cladding 9/125 µm. Light travels in a single mode, which reduces loss and enables very long distances (up to ~100 km in real-world use).
Multi Mode (MM): Typically orange, with core/cladding 50/125 µm or 62/125 µm. Larger core allows multiple modes of light, which increases dispersion and limits the distance (~200 m) and speed (≈100 Mbps at 850 nm). Suitable for in-building use; cost is lower than SM.
